Creating video based e-learning content in 5 steps

In every organization, we all have hundreds of hours of video content lying at any point of time. The videos shot during training programs, workshops, messages from top management and so on. These videos are shot with the hope that someday it will be shared with the employees and some kind of learning will happen.

But the problem is that are not easy to share.  You can’t just email videos because of the size factor. Sure you can use YouTube or create a streaming server. However, video sites like YouTube are mostly blocked by company firewalls and there are copyright issues to handle.

So, why not use videos to create rapid e-learning content and leverage your existing LMS to distribute them. Here’s a real easy trick to create rapid learning content from video content.

You will need rapid authoring tool Articulate for this. You may download a trial copy of it from http://www.articulate.com  (I am assuming here that you are familiar with the tool. If not please go their site, they have lot of training recourses)

Step 1: Select the video that you want to convert into e-learning content. If it is a long video cut it into smaller logical pieces and now convert the video to .MP4 or .FLV format.

Step 2: Create a PowerPoint presentation. Name the presentation with an appropriate title and save it.

Step 3: Now go to the Engage Interaction tab and create and create a Media Tour interaction.  Click the Change Media Link below the default Sunflower image and insert your video there. By default the Media Tour had two tabs, delete one.

Step 4: Click the ‘Save and Return’ button to return to your presentation. You may want to include a few quizzes in the next slide to make it a complete package.

Step 5: Publish the presentation for LMS and you are ready to upload it to your LMS. Your learners will be now able to this video in the similar manner they user your other e-learning content.
